Let The Journey Begin

Mar 25, 2021

Laura Hawkins is a mental health and substance abuse counselor who has spent over a decade in social work, specializing in homeless adults. She obtained an Undergraduate Degree in Applied Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Criminology from Regis University in Denver, CO. She also has a CADPT certification in the state of California. Her objective is to open her own non-profit organization to address the homelessness epidemic in Los Angeles.

This week, Laura joins Hilary and Jason on the show to talk about her own traumas as well as the work she does as a mental health and substance abuse counselor. Laura details losing her father to alcoholism as a young adult and how much of a shock it had on her system. She also talks about how inherited co-dependency unknowingly started showing up in other areas of her life. Laura uses these experiences as well as her education to help those in need as homelessness is a massive problem in the United States, especially in the city of Los Angeles. Many times, substance abuse and poor mental health go hand in hand and Laura discusses how empowering it has been to assist someone struggling with these issues and ultimately watch them turn their life around.
